Exeter Should Focus on On

Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell emphasizes the importance of the players focusing on their performance and steering clear of off-field distractions impacting the League One club.

The Grecians are considering potential redundancies due to financial difficulties stemming from overspending last season.

The Exeter City Supporters’ Trust, the fan group that oversees the club, recently provided a loan of £200,000 on top of an earlier £400,000 loan over the summer to help stabilize the situation. Currently, the Grecians sit just one spot and one point above the relegation zone in League One.

As Exeter prepares for an FA Cup match against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, they face the risk of dropping into the bottom four if their rivals, Plymouth Argyle, earn a win against Bradford City in their rescheduled match.

“There’s a lot of noise around us, but we need to harness positivity by performing well and winning games,” Caldwell stated during an interview with BBC Radio Devon. “As players and staff, it’s crucial that we focus on maintaining our bubble, concentrating on our processes, and preparing ourselves to secure victories.”

Caldwell expressed confidence in his team’s commitment, noting, “I haven’t observed any change in our work ethic; the dedication from both the staff and players has been outstanding from the start, and that remains true.”

However, the club’s financial situation limits Caldwell’s ability to enhance the squad in the January transfer window, though he remains optimistic about potential additions. “This doesn’t mean we can’t sign anyone,” he clarified. “We need to be strategic and innovative in how we approach any changes necessary for success.”

Reflecting on past transfer windows, Caldwell mentioned the challenges faced, especially during difficult periods like when the team went 13 games without a win. “Spending doesn’t necessarily guarantee success,” he remarked, emphasizing that while financial resources can open opportunities, wise spending is crucial. He acknowledged the competitive landscape, citing how other teams can vastly outspend.

“The key in January will be our ability to enhance the quality of our squad through creativity and innovation, while also improving our current players,” he concluded. “I believe we have done this well in my time here, and we will continue to strive for that.”
