Fabregas: I Expected…

Cesc Fabregas expressed that he “expected more” from Como following their 0-0 stalemate against Udinese and noted Alvaro Morata’s disappointment at not being able to play more.

Having previously enjoyed a five-match winning streak, Como seemed on course for an impressive Champions League qualification.

However, their momentum faced a setback with the frustrating draw against Udinese, where scoring chances were scarce.

“Both teams struggled to find spaces; it was a very tactical match where neither side took the lead,” Fabregas stated in an interview with DAZN Italia.

“Despite this, we did have two significant scoring opportunities, which is important. Overall, I was not pleased with our possession; many players were not performing at their best today. Conversely, Udinese created very little threat, allowing us to maintain our 15th clean sheet.”

Como remains in fourth place with 58 points, four clear of Roma. However, a Juventus victory over Genoa could see them reduce the gap to just one point.

Atalanta also poses a threat as the Serie A season enters its final seven matches.

“Let’s not overlook that Roma, Napoli, Atalanta, and Fiorentina all dropped points here. Additionally, some of my international players had long travel schedules recently, which I must take into account as a coach,” he remarked.

“In situations like this, it’s crucial to avoid defeat and maintain a clean sheet, although I acknowledge that I expected more from our performance.”

What aspects of the match did Fabregas find lacking in his team?

“Our possession, transitions, and vertical passes were all lacking. We didn’t move the ball quickly enough, failed to mark properly, and lost our duels. Against a physical and experienced opponent like Udinese, these mistakes are costly.”

The challenge in creating scoring chances even led Fabregas to remove Tasos Douvikas, leaving the team without a center-forward until the late introduction of Alvaro Morata.

“Morata came on with great motivation, as evidenced by his attitude. He is understandably disappointed about wanting more playing time this season; I would feel the same way in his shoes. However, I always emphasize the importance of making the most of the minutes you do have on the pitch rather than the sheer volume of them.”

“This is the mentality shift I expect from all players nowadays, especially with five substitutions and so many matches. Morata is contributing to the team and is gradually regaining his form. We are a family here, and each player’s journey is significant as we progress through the season.”
