Bruno Fernandes stressed that Manchester United needs to take decisive action to revive their Champions League qualification bid after suffering a disappointing home defeat to their rivals, Leeds United.
The Red Devils experienced their first Premier League loss to Leeds in over 23 years on Monday, with Noah Okafor scoring twice in a memorable performance before Lisandro Martínez was controversially sent off, and Casemiro managed to net one goal back.
Leeds’ memorable 2-1 victory at Old Trafford boosted their chances of avoiding relegation and represented only the second defeat for Michael Carrick since he took over in January.
Despite the loss, United remains in a Champions League qualifying position in third, but another setback against sixth-placed Chelsea this weekend could be detrimental.
Expressing his frustration, Fernandes discussed the importance of the upcoming match at Stamford Bridge: “This is crucial for us because, as I’ve mentioned before, our fate is in our own hands.
“We rely on ourselves, and we need to do what it takes to secure points as we strive for a top-four finish.”

Fernandes, speaking in a second language after such a disappointing match, could be forgiven for overlooking that finishing in the top five would also suffice for Champions League qualification next season.
However, head coach Carrick likely shared the concern of observers, including co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, at a costly first-half showing that left the team booed off the pitch at halftime.
“We tried, but it wasn’t enough,” Fernandes told MUTV. “When you concede two goals in the first half, it makes things extremely challenging for you.
“In the second half, we tried to push for goals. We scored one and had opportunities to add more, but it just wasn’t our evening.”
Monday marked a historic night for Leeds, celebrating their first win at Old Trafford since an FA Cup upset in 2010 and their first league victory on United’s ground since 1981.
This was Daniel Farke’s squad’s second away win of the season, lifting them six points clear of the relegation zone ahead of a crucial match against bottom-placed Wolves at Elland Road this Saturday.
Leeds defender James Justin remarked, “Everyone understands the significance of this match.
“The away supporters, as always, were incredibly loud; I can barely express how much their support means to us.
“While I appreciate their emotions, we must remain focused.
“There’s still work to do as the season comes to a close, but for now, they can enjoy this victory—then it’s back to the grind on Saturday.
“It’s a huge match for our survival this season. This victory is important, but our focus is already on Wolves, so we need to be prepared.”
