Darren Fletcher believes that the disappointment of suffering back-to-back cup final defeats will motivate his Manchester United team towards greater success next season.
United faced a 2-1 defeat in the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City, conceding a heartbreaking late goal at the Joie Stadium.
Additionally, they suffered a penalty shootout loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League Under-18 Cup final last month and finished second to City in the Premier League North standings.
Fletcher acknowledged that his team didn’t perform at their best on Thursday night, noting that many key players were below par.
Nevertheless, he believes they will gain valuable experience from the season and views it as a successful first year in charge.
“I am really proud of them,” he stated. “I’ve enjoyed every moment. No hard feelings tonight. We didn’t deserve to lose to Crystal Palace, but we unfortunately fell short against City.”
“The players are devastated, but experiencing defeat can be a powerful motivator as we look ahead to next season. It transforms your summer.”
“There’s no time for celebration; the focus is on addressing the pain of losing.”
Next season, Fletcher will have four starters back, including standout forward JJ Gabriel, alongside 16-year-old Kai Rooney, who missed the final due to injury.
It will be interesting to see if Michael Carrick’s son, Jacey, secures a place in Fletcher’s plans as well.
