Flick Appreciates Support…

After his debut as manager of Barcelona in Sunday’s El Clasico against Real Madrid, Hansi Flick expressed his gratitude to both his team and the supporters, even as he mourned the loss of his father.

With a 2-0 victory at a packed Camp Nou, Barca secured the La Liga title in a match that was especially poignant for Flick.

A moment of silence was observed before the start of the match, with players donning black armbands in honor of Flick’s father.

“This morning, my mum informed me of my father’s passing. I contemplated whether to keep it to myself or to share it with my team,” Flick recounted.

“To me, they are like family, and I chose to communicate the news to the players. What they accomplished today was extraordinary, and I will forever cherish this moment.”

Marcus Rashford, who netted the first goal for the team, lauded Flick’s strength during this challenging time. “He demonstrated remarkable character by staying committed to the team under such difficult circumstances,” Rashford told BBC Sport.

“It was crucial for us to give our all on the field, especially since he faces tough decisions daily. I wish him and his family all the best.”

Since taking over from Xavi in May 2024, the former Bayern Munich and Germany coach has led Barcelona to five trophy victories.

“It was an intense match, and this day will remain etched in my memory,” Flick shared with the crowd, clearly emotional.

“I want to express my thanks to the squad and to everyone who has supported us. Above all, I’m incredibly proud to have such a talented team. Thank you for everything. Now, it’s time to celebrate.”

Barcelona confirmed the news of Flick’s father’s passing shortly before the match, stating: “We share in your sorrow, and our thoughts are with you and your family during this challenging time.”

Real Madrid also expressed their condolences in a statement: “Real Madrid, its president, and its board deeply regret the passing of Hansi Flick’s father. We extend our sympathies and support to the family and all their loved ones. Rest in peace.”
