Forest Hero Gibbs

Forest Hero Gibbs

This transfer saga could go down as one of the biggest ‘what ifs’ in football history.

Instead of finding the net to help Nottingham Forest steer clear of relegation, Morgan Gibbs-White might have been the hero for Tottenham.

Last July, Spurs believed they had secured his signature, but a protracted transfer ordeal—where Forest even considered legal action—continues to pose potential consequences nearly a year later.

The England international netted his first hat-trick during a 4-1 victory over Burnley, propelling Forest five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with five fixtures remaining while putting Spurs in a precarious position.

Gibbs-White also delivered the decisive goal in Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League quarter-final second-leg triumph over Porto, helping Forest advance 2-1 on aggregate to face Aston Villa.

With 15 goals across all competitions this season, the 26-year-old continues to be a game-changer for Vitor Pereira’s squad as they aim to secure their top-flight status while Tottenham falters.

‘A double blow for Spurs’

The seismic impact of Forest’s 3-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just 28 days ago cannot be overstated.

Despite only being three points above relegation, the importance of that win was monumental.

It marked Pereira’s first managerial victory for Forest, with Gibbs-White contributing a crucial second goal.

Fast forward a month, and his hat-trick adds further misfortune to Tottenham, serving as a painful reminder of what might have been.

Negotiations for his £60 million release clause appeared settled last July.

However, Forest’s anger over Spurs’ alleged improper conduct led to the club contemplating legal action, insisting they hadn’t granted permission for Tottenham to approach their player.

Shortly after, Gibbs-White signed a new three-year contract, symbolizing how both clubs have faced turbulent seasons, with Forest seeing four managerial changes and Spurs teetering on the brink of relegation for the first time since 1977.

“A massive three points. We understood the game’s significance. The first half was a bit tense,” Gibbs-White shared with BBC Match of the Day.

“The manager urged us to give our all—whatever happens, happens. The lads came out fighting, took our chances, and controlled the match.”

“I was a bit erratic with the first goal. For the second, I knew I had to be more composed. Scoring the third was a delight.

“We’ve secured the win and widened that gap.”

Instead of driving Spurs’ survival efforts, Gibbs-White has plunged them into deeper trouble.

Currently sitting 18th, Spurs will find themselves four points adrift of safety if West Ham defeats Crystal Palace on Monday.

Former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy commented on Match of the Day: “Football is filled with peculiarities.”

“Spurs fans have long lamented the club’s struggles to secure quality players.

“It’s uncertain whether that stems from poor negotiations, financial issues, or something else entirely. However, a player like Gibbs-White would have thrived at Tottenham this season, hitting the ground running—unlike Xavi Simons, who is still adapting.

This is a significant blow for Spurs, as Gibbs-White could have been instrumental in their survival instead of providing Forest with renewed hope.

‘He possesses immense talent’

Forest has faced challenges at home, having secured only two victories in their last 11 league encounters at the City Ground.

Throughout that stretch, the team managed only nine goals, with six of them coming from wins over Leeds and Tottenham.

Their last home league victory came on December 14, when they defeated Spurs 3-0, highlighting the need for a standout performance. Enter Gibbs-White.

“In the first half, we were discussing things. Morgan wasn’t performing at his best,” Pereira remarked.

“The team struggled to find him in the right positions and timings. At halftime, I challenged them to show their quality and spirit.”

“He showcased his talent brilliantly. He possesses a wealth of skills, team spirit, and leadership, guiding the team. I have seen the leadership qualities within the squad. Together they demonstrated resilience and determination.”

Gibbs-White’s hat-trick—his first multi-goal game since 2022—ties him as the top English scorer in the Premier League this season, sitting on 12 goals alongside Danny Welbeck.

This performance also serves as a reminder to England manager Thomas Tuchel ahead of the upcoming World Cup, especially after Gibbs-White was omitted from last month’s 35-man squad for fixtures against Japan and Uruguay.

Pereira stated, “He deserves recognition for his leadership qualities.

“When performances falter, many players tend to shy away. That’s not Morgan; he seeks the ball, revels in responsibility, and aims to both score and provide assists.”

“He is a phenomenal player for us—not just in technical and tactical aspects, but also in his character.”
