SC Freiburg, representing the Bundesliga in the Europa League, dramatically turned their fortunes around with a stunning 5-1 victory against KRC Genk in the second leg of their 2025/26 UEL Round-of-16 match on Thursday. Nearly everything went right for Julian Schuster’s side on that memorable night.
Vincenzo Grifo made a significant impact by scoring the crucial third goal, allowing him to surpass the club’s all-time scoring record. Defender Matthias Ginter delivered such an impressive performance that reporters began to inquire if he might be considered for the German national team again. It was indeed a night to remember at the Europa Park Stadion.

Following the match, Mainz also highlighted the importance of their supporters in progressing through the competition. After joining the fans in the Kurve post-match, Grifo praised the SCF ultras for their incredible support.
Schuster at a loss for words
“I just can’t find the right words,” Schuster stated during his post-match interview with RTL+. “Football moves so quickly. I just want to take a moment to enjoy this achievement. I’ve learned so much this year [his second season in charge] and truly understand how much this victory means amidst the challenges we face.
“It’s a privilege to be a head coach, and I owe my gratitude to my family,” Schuster continued. “My wife supports me through everything and allows me these moments that I live for.

Ginter shines in top form
“I don’t know, was I really playing that badly before?” Ginter joked after being recognized for his second consecutive standout performance in Europe while fielding questions about a potential spot on the national team. “I spoke with [Julian Nagelsmann] on Tuesday and was a bit disappointed about not being nominated. I secured my eighth and ninth assists tonight.
“Yes, he called,” said the 52-cap Germany international when asked if Nagelsmann reached out. “It wasn’t the best conversation. He mentioned that the situation wasn’t completely resolved yet. One shouldn’t deem it an unfair decision, just a sporting one. Football is a daily grind, and one gets new chances often.
“I don’t fully understand it,” Ginter concluded. “I wouldn’t say it’s rocket science, but the only aspect I can control is my performance on the pitch.“

Grifo expresses gratitude to fans for their choreographies
“The fans were incredible,” Grifo noted in his RTL+ interview. “I believe they worked late into the night to prepare the choreography. They play a crucial role in generating the energy in the stadium, which gives us a significant boost.
“At halftime, we told ourselves, ‘Hey, we’ve turned the game around; it’s 0-0 on aggregate, which was our goal.’ Maybe not everyone thought we could do it, but we did.
“Of course, one works hard throughout their career to achieve milestones like this,” Grifo added regarding his record. “It makes this evening even more special. There’s an incredible excitement moving forward.“
