Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has secured his future with the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at Camp Nou until 2029.
The Dutch international’s previous contract was set to expire in 2026, but this extension demonstrates a strong commitment from both the player and the club.
De Jong arrived at Barcelona from Ajax in 2019 for €86 million and has since made 267 appearances, winning two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, and two Spanish Super Cups.
At 28 years of age, he remains one of the club’s highest-paid players, having deferred portions of his salary during the COVID-19 pandemic to alleviate financial strains on the club.
There were previous tensions surrounding his contract, with Barcelona considering a sale to Manchester United in 2022 to generate funds. However, De Jong opted to stay.
This decision has proven wise under manager Hansi Flick, who has integrated the midfielder as a vital part of his tactical plans since taking over last year.
“My dream has always been to play for Barcelona,” De Jong stated. “Now that I am here, I hope to continue this dream for many more years.”
Discussions regarding the new contract began earlier this year and progressed well after De Jong changed agents, which enhanced the communication between both parties.
Flick’s arrival also played a key role in this development, with De Jong describing their rapport as ‘very good’ and acknowledging Flick’s confidence in his skills.
Last season, De Jong was instrumental in Barcelona’s title-winning campaign, making 46 appearances in all competitions, even after missing the first few weeks due to injury.
His composed demeanor in midfield and his developing chemistry with Pedri and Gavi have emphasized his significance in Flick’s setup.
De Jong is now the second-highest Dutch player regarding appearances for Barcelona, trailing only Phillip Cocu.
