Barcelona and Frenkie de Jong marked the ceremonial signing of his new contract on Wednesday, with the Dutch midfielder extending his commitment to the Blaugrana for an additional three years. The 28-year-old has signed a deal that will keep him at the club until 2029, well ahead of his current contract’s expiration in nine months.
This season marks de Jong’s seventh year with Barcelona, having joined from Ajax for €86 million in 2019. The Netherlands international’s path has had its ups and downs, particularly during a period when the club explored the possibility of selling him.
De Jong Addresses Media Misrepresentation
Part of the scrutiny stemmed from suggestions that de Jong was underperforming on the pitch while being the club’s highest earner off it—a claim he refuted in an interview with Sport.
“I won’t disclose my salary, but the discussions surrounding it have always been exaggerated and misrepresented. That has impacted how people perceive me,” he stated.

At times, de Jong’s relationship with Barcelona’s management was strained. However, he now seems to have a more positive rapport with his teammates.
“I don’t feel undervalued by my teammates, coaches, or people at the club. The judgment of my worth seems to come more from the media than my colleagues.”

De Jong Thrilled to Continue with Barcelona
Despite addressing some lingering concerns, the overall mood was one of celebration, and de Jong expressed his happiness at committing to Barcelona for the long haul.
“I’ve always said that as a child, I dreamed of playing for Barça, and now I’m living that dream. I want to remain here and win many titles.”
“I’ve consistently stated my desire to stay with Barcelona. I want to be here for as long as possible, as I feel good about the club, the city, my teammates, and the management.”
