About a year after his son was born, and with only two senior appearances behind him, Gill received an opportunity that changed his life.
Argentine top-flight club San Lorenzo took a chance on him, bringing him in on an initial loan.
He closed out 2024 with their reserves and became a first-team regular in 2025, catching the eye of Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro.
Called up in March and June—and with Paraguay already assured of a World Cup berth—Gill made his senior debut in the final qualifier against Peru last September.
He then featured in five friendlies and entered the World Cup as Paraguay’s first-choice goalkeeper. The tournament began with a 4-1 defeat to co-hosts the United States.
Since then, he has conceded only once in three matches, including extra time against Germany, saving 16 of the 17 shots on target.
Although he was arguably fortunate to win a free-kick in the last-32 clash that stopped Germany from doubling their lead, Gill made two superb saves in the shootout to earn FIFA’s player of the match award.
He dedicated the accolade to his family, especially his nephew Alexander, who he said is currently in hospital back home.
Having witnessed his son survive a traumatic birth, Gill is now trying to inspire his nephew to keep fighting as he and Paraguay continue their unexpected World Cup run.
On Instagram, Gill said the trophy was for Alexander, wished him a swift recovery, and added that his godfather is supporting him from afar.
