Gareth Barry: Winning…

In a recent interview, former Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry shared with City Xtra that the exhilaration of winning trophies is unmatched as he reminisced about his time in the English top flight.

The 44-year-old enjoyed a prolific career, primarily with Aston Villa, but also played for Everton and West Bromwich Albion, ultimately amassing a remarkable 653 Premier League appearances over 22 years.

Barry made 175 appearances for Manchester City, playing a pivotal role in their 2011-12 Premier League title victory. He began his career at Aston Villa, where he spent 11 years, before transferring to the Etihad Stadium in 2009 to join Mark Hughes, who was in charge after the club’s takeover by Sheikh Mansour the previous year.

Following the transformation initiated by the Abu Dhabi United Group, owners of the City Football Group (CFG), the Blues have experienced unprecedented success, solidifying their status as one of the most successful clubs in England in the 21st century.

Barry was part of the squad during two significant triumphs: the aforementioned Premier League championship and the 2011 FA Cup. He was integral to City’s midfield, playing alongside notable talents like Nigel de Jong, Yaya Toure, and David Silva.

In a recent discussion with OLBG for City Xtra, Barry reflected on his record for the most appearances in the English top flight.

“Yes, I’ve always taken pride in my debut for Villa in 1998,” the Englishman stated. “Achieving the dream of playing in the Premier League for a club that I loved was incredible. I was extremely nervous on my debut, but it became a proud moment for me.”

“Captaining Aston Villa was another highlight of my career, donning the armband for several years. Then, moving on to Manchester City, the joy of winning trophies is incomparable. That’s what football is all about. Winning the FA Cup and the Premier League late in my twenties brought immense relief and created special memories, especially being part of the historic Aguero match against Queens Park Rangers for the title. Every debut was significant to me, and I cherish my time at all my clubs.”

With an unparalleled number of Premier League appearances, Barry’s record stands as a daunting benchmark for current players, with only former Manchester City star James Milner closely trailing by just six appearances.

Milner, currently with Brighton and having previously represented Liverpool for eight years, is likely to catch and surpass Barry, having already made 11 appearances this season, although he is managing a recent muscle injury.

At 39, Milner remains in excellent condition and continues to pursue the top spot, despite reduced playing time since his Champions League-winning days at Liverpool. For context, Ipswich Town’s Ashley Young stands as the closest competitor still active in the division, having made 485 Premier League appearances.
