This week, Marc-Andre ter Stegen underwent surgery for a hamstring injury he suffered while playing for Girona. The 33-year-old goalkeeper, who was signed from Barcelona during the winter transfer window to secure regular play ahead of the upcoming World Cup, is now facing at least two months out— a significant setback for both him and his new team.
Having taken the starting position from Paulo Gazzaniga in Girona’s last two matches against Getafe and Real Oviedo, ter Stegen’s return is not anticipated until April at the earliest. Consequently, Girona is left with Gazzaniga as their sole experienced goalkeeper.

In light of this situation, Girona has swiftly acted to find a replacement for ter Stegen. According to Cadena SER (via ED), they have reached an agreement with Ruben Blanco to join Michel Sanchez’s squad for the remainder of the season.

Blanco, who previously spent 11 years with Celta Vigo from 2011 to 2022, has been a free agent since parting ways with Marseille in January. He is set to finalize his move to Girona shortly.
Blanco to Compete with Gazzaniga for Starting Position
With ter Stegen unavailable, Gazzaniga and Blanco will vie for the starting goalkeeper position, while 20-year-old Vladyslav Krapyvtsov serves as the third option. Gazzaniga will have the upper hand, as he is poised to take the field against Sevilla on Sunday, positioning him as the primary contender initially.
Girona are optimistic about closing the season on a high note with Blanco potentially playing a pivotal role, provided he earns the trust of Michel.
