Guardiola Keeps Trafford…

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has indicated that there may be a possibility for goalkeeper James Trafford to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old returned to City from Burnley over the summer and began the season as a starter for the first three matches. However, that changed when the club secured Italy international Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris St-Germain on transfer deadline day.

Since then, Trafford has taken on a backup role, recently playing in Saturday’s impressive 10-1 victory against Exeter City in the FA Cup. He is also set to start in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Newcastle on Tuesday.

Guardiola commented on Trafford’s response to Donnarumma’s signing, stating, “He has reacted really well. There are no complaints, and James is an excellent goalkeeper — there is no doubt about that. I completely understand the situation.”

“Goalkeepers are different from other positions; it’s often one or the other. It’s not like we can rotate players in and out,” he added. When asked about the possibility of Trafford leaving in January, Guardiola replied, “No. I hope he stays for many years, but the goalkeeping situation is unique, and we will see how it develops.”

Notably, Trafford turned down the chance to transfer to St James’ Park during the summer, a move that could have improved his chances of challenging Jordan Pickford for a spot on the England squad.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe expressed his admiration for Trafford, stating, “He’s a very good goalkeeper, and I’m a big fan. Manchester City is in a strong position with their two goalkeepers this season, who have both been outstanding.”

Howe added, “I don’t see it as a competition for us. I wish him all the best in his career, and we look forward to facing him if he plays.”
