Had They Played Like This…

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock expressed his belief that the Reds could have been in contention for the Premier League title if they had consistently matched the performance they demonstrated during their Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris St-Germain.

Arne Slot’s team showed significant improvement and appeared to be on the verge of a comeback at Anfield, but ultimately fell short, losing 2-0 on the night, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

During an appearance on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast, Warnock shared, “The team displayed a genuine desire to secure a positive result. They energized the crowd, and in return, the crowd invigorated them, creating an exciting atmosphere.”

“I’m puzzled as to why we haven’t seen this level of play throughout the season. If they had performed like this regularly, they would have been vying for the title. However, they still struggled to generate significant goal-scoring opportunities.”

“While Paris St-Germain defended well at times, Liverpool currently seems to lack dynamic players in the wide areas,” he continued, noting that although [Rio] Ngumoha made an appearance, his inexperience was evident at times.

Warnock added, “Liverpool possesses a lot of players but couldn’t carry them effectively. In contrast, PSG’s attackers worked back into defensive positions, showcasing teamwork and performance. Currently, Liverpool lacks this essential element, which is concerning.”
