Sport Bild and Hamburger Abendblatt have reported that Hamburg is nearing a deal to sign former Leicester City striker Patson Daka on a free transfer. After five years with the Foxes, the Zambian international, who has 57 caps, became a free agent on July 1st after his contract expired and was not renewed. Currently, the 27-year-old’s market value is estimated at €3 million, a significant drop from the €30 million Leicester paid for him.

As HSV prepares for their second season in the German top league, acquiring additional attacking options is essential for them to maintain their Bundesliga status. Merlin Polzin’s side managed to score only 40 goals last season, and no player in the squad scored more than five goals throughout the campaign.

Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer (five goals) and Robert Glatzel (three goals) have already left the club. Loanees Philip Otele (Basel) and Damion Downs (Southampton) have also returned to their respective clubs after unproductive spells.
Hamburg does still have experienced forwards like Rayan Philippe, while captain Yussuf Poulsen is the only other natural center forward available, which heightens the urgency to sign another striker, especially given Poulsen’s ongoing injury problems.
Daka has spent six seasons in total with Austrian Red Bull-affiliated clubs RB Salzburg and FC Liefering, and he is fluent in German, which should facilitate a swift resolution of the deal, pending a successful medical.
