Howard on USMNT: Poch has…

Tim Howard, the legendary goalkeeper who represented the United States men’s national team in 121 matches, believes that current head coach Maurico Pochettino is performing exceptionally well thus far.

“Mauricio Pochettino is an outstanding manager,” Howard stated. “Taking charge of a national team just 18 months before a World Cup is no easy task. He has had to identify talent, create effective partnerships, and navigate injuries.”

“As the World Cup approaches, now less than 50 days away, I think he’s done a commendable job given the limited time he has. While we might not have seen the final product yet, which can be concerning, there’s hope that by the time the World Cup arrives, the team can find that crucial element of unity and camaraderie. The team has been somewhat disjointed, and that’s something we still need to witness fully.”

The former keeper for Everton and Manchester United is also confident that the U.S. can withstand the pressures of hosting the tournament this summer.

“It’s a positive kind of pressure,” he explained. “When you consider the World Cups of the past three decades, such as France in 1998, South Korea in 2002, and Germany in 2006, all these teams managed to harness the spirit of their nation to propel them forward.

“Some went on to win the tournament, while others reached the semifinals. Being the hosts means everyone has a favorite team, but most Americans will consider our team their second favorite; they want us to succeed.”

“The players will feel that support and excitement. This will be the biggest World Cup in history, and our players will undoubtedly sense the energy from the American public.”

Howard also discussed the MLS, the influence of Lionel Messi, and the possibility of Neymar joining the league. “Today’s MLS is a different league, and Lionel Messi exemplifies that. This is no longer a league that simply accommodates superstars; it’s competitive, and even the best players can face challenges.”

“When you’re at the top, like Messi, you can showcase your immense talent. However, this is not a retirement league, that perception has changed.”

“Owners, including myself as an investor in Houston Dynamo, are wise to invest in players who are genuinely committed and eager to contribute. If top players come to the league, their dedication will be key, and that’s perfectly fine. The league has made significant strides and attracts top talent.”
