Howe on Team Fitness: A Season

Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, addressed the media ahead of their Premier League match against Crystal Palace, scheduled for Sunday at St James’ Park (kick-off at 15:00 GMT).

Here are the main points from his press conference:

  • Lewis Hall is expected to be fit for Sunday’s match, although Howe stated they would take “a closer look” at him on Friday.

  • Defenders Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier are “close” to returning, but Howe was noncommittal about their availability for Sunday. Emil Krafth, however, is further behind in his recovery.

  • Sven Botman has been training with the team this week, which means he could potentially be involved on Sunday.

  • Howe noted that having any of the defenders return would be a “boost” for the squad as they have been “very thin on the ground” in defensive options lately.

  • Regarding Joe Willock, Howe mentioned that he “isn’t close” to being back yet but is “improving,” with the end of January being a realistic target for his return.

  • Howe described January as a “season-defining month” for Newcastle, with nine matches in various competitions and “minimal rest” in between.

  • He highlighted that most of these matches being at home is a “positive” due to limited travel and their strong home record.

  • On why this period is “season-defining,” Howe explained: “We’re fighting for every point in the Premier League. It hasn’t been easy, but the points gap is small. If we can create a winning streak, things can change quickly. We haven’t done it yet, but this is our moment. Our focus is there.”

  • When discussing the upcoming transfer window, Howe stated, “We have a well-balanced squad when everyone is fit, but if injuries hit during such a crucial month, it changes our perspective.”

  • As for Crystal Palace, he said: “It will be a tough game as their away form is strong, and they are defensively solid. It’s a match we can succeed in if we perform at our best level, but we need to prepare thoroughly.”
