Hughes Joins Sunderland…

Striker Elise Hughes has officially joined Sunderland Women in Women’s Super League 2 (WSL 2) by signing a two-year contract.

The 25-year-old Wales international makes the move to Wearside after confirming her departure from Crystal Palace in June.

Hughes played a vital role in helping Palace secure promotion back to the Women’s Super League during the 2025-26 season, featuring in all 22 matches and netting four goals.

“This is a significant milestone for me, and I’m thrilled to begin this new chapter,” Hughes expressed on the Sunderland club website. “The club possesses remarkable ambition and a rich history, making it an exciting time to be involved.”

“Having spent several years in this league and achieved success, I look forward to bringing my experience to the squad and contributing with as many goals and assists as possible.”

Sunderland Women finished eighth in WSL 2 last season, but they are looking to make strides after a recent takeover last month.

Hughes will join fellow Welsh player Rhiannon Roberts at Sunderland, while another Welsh player, Mared Griffiths, was on loan with the team last season.
