The match between Hull City and Watford was postponed just 20 minutes before kick-off, marking it as the third Championship game of Sunday to be called off due to freezing weather conditions.
The early 12:00 GMT match between Sheffield United and Oxford United, as well as Portsmouth’s 15:00 GMT fixture against Ipswich, had already been postponed earlier in the day, along with several other fixtures across League One and League Two, all affected by frozen pitches.
Although the playing surface at Hull’s MKM Stadium was reported to be playable, match officials deemed the surrounding areas “unsafe,” leading to the postponement.
“Despite ongoing efforts to improve conditions, they have not sufficiently changed, and with falling temperatures, we cannot guarantee player safety,” Hull City stated on their website.
In total, ten fixtures have also been called off in League Two, and an additional four in League One due to the cold weather.
In League One, Sunday’s cancellations included Doncaster versus Luton, Barnsley’s trip to Port Vale, Rotherham against Mansfield, and Stevenage facing Leyton Orient.
In League Two, five matches had already been postponed on Saturday, with Barnet v Crewe, Barrow v Bristol Rovers, Cambridge v Grimsby, Colchester v Accrington, and Newport v Tranmere all failing pitch inspections on Sunday.
