Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté (26) recently shared his insights with Ouest-France regarding the vital role of support systems in a successful football career. The French international, who recently withdrew from Didier Deschamps’ squad due to a minor thigh injury, emphasizes that an athlete’s entourage contributes to around 60% of their success. With five older brothers—Diawoye, Sirima, Mamby, Sikou, and Moriba—Konaté benefits from significant family backing.
“I have become the player I am today thanks to each of them,” Konaté stated. “From my initial steps at Paris Université Club two decades ago to my current position at Liverpool, they have always been a crucial support.” He noted that the respect he maintains for his brothers keeps him grounded. Reflecting on his journey, Konaté revealed that after signing his first professional contract with Ralf Rangnick’s RB Leipzig, he began to earn a comfortable living but hesitated to spend any money. “I didn’t indulge in any hedonistic pleasures—no new cars, clothes, or shoes. I was worried they’d say I had changed.”
Eventually, one of his brothers encouraged him to treat himself, prompting a change in his mindset. “I’ll admit it: I went a bit overboard, especially with clothes.”
Konaté also shared how his older brothers serve as “lightning rods” that help him stay focused on football. “You can’t imagine how much athletes need them. Many people, regardless of their intentions, are drawn to us. Ninety-five percent come because of my status as Konaté, the footballer, rather than Ibrahima, the individual. They want to exploit my fame without caring about me as a person… My brothers filter out anyone trying to approach me.”
