Raffaele Palladino believes Atalanta can still turn the tide in their Champions League play-off against Borussia Dortmund, stating it’s ‘only the first leg’ and discussing the tension with Nico Kovac.

Atalanta got off to a shaky start in Dortmund, partly due to a 15-minute delay in kick-off caused by the home team arriving late due to traffic issues.

Despite that, they quickly found their rhythm, scoring within three minutes with Serhou Guirassy’s impressive header, followed shortly after by Guirassy assisting Maximilian Beier for a 2-0 lead just before halftime.

Palladino optimistic about a comeback

Atalanta had to make several adjustments in Dortmund, with both Giacomo Raspadori and Charles De Ketelaere sidelined for at least a month due to injuries.

Palladino emphasized, “We shouldn’t dwell on who’s missing but rather focus on those who played,” in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“It was unfortunate to fall behind so early, as we knew Borussia Dortmund had a strong attack and could exploit spaces. We failed to mark properly on that first goal.”

Fabio Capello, speaking on Sky Sport Italia, remarked that matching Dortmund man for man could be risky. Palladino agreed, acknowledging their strikers’ technical and athletic prowess.

“Their midfielders also impressed me, they are well-rounded players. However, we must approach this with courage. We’ve analyzed our opponents, and these matches help us recognize our strengths alongside theirs,” he shared.

“It won’t be easy to change the outcome, but I have faith. The fans will drive us forward, and that’s what makes football exciting—it’s the chance to turn things around.”

Gianluca Scamacca returned to the starting lineup but appeared out of form, while Nikola Krstovic brought more energy when he came on in the second half.

“We made too many mistakes and got stuck down one side; our play was too predictable and slow. However, we improved substantially in the second half, showing better possession, movement, and more attacking options,” Palladino assessed.

“I felt we were in a position to create chances but lacked a bit of quality in the final third. We need to analyze our performance with the team and aim for improvements next time.”

“Let’s remember, we were up against a solid team that’s second in the Bundesliga, just six points off Bayern Munich. I’m disappointed with the result, but notable is they scored from only two shots on target. We must remain optimistic; our goal is to advance, and if we fall short, we’ll know we gave our all. These young players will gain valuable experience from this match.”

This result means Atalanta faces a significant challenge in the second leg in Bergamo on Wednesday, February 25, where they must win by two clear goals to force extra time in the Champions League play-off.

“This was just the first leg; the second leg will be played on our home ground, and just as they scored two goals against us tonight, we can do the same in Bergamo,” Palladino asserted.

“The players understand what we need to achieve, and we will certainly approach the second leg with great intensity.”

There appeared to be some discord at the final whistle, as Palladino left in frustration without shaking hands with Kovac.

“I’m not one to complain; they were disputing every decision along the sidelines. I prefer to let the referees do their job, whether it’s good or bad, and I simply mentioned to him that he should allow the referees to manage the game.”
