Liverpool’s record signing Denise O’Sullivan is expected to depart this summer, just six months after arriving.

A return to the NWSL appears most likely, with Gotham FC leading the chase. The Republic of Ireland international joined in January for around £300,000 and has been a standout since.

Her exit would be a major blow for the Reds as they rebuild following a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. O’Sullivan has made 13 appearances, nine in the league, and helped Gareth Taylor’s side reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals.

Reports indicate the move could begin as a one-year loan including an obligation to buy. Sources say Liverpool are in positive talks with both O’Sullivan and Gotham and expect a substantial fee.

The 32-year-old’s decision is understood to be personal, with a desire to return to the United States. She previously spent nine seasons with North Carolina Courage, making over 150 appearances and serving as captain.

Capped 132 times by Ireland, O’Sullivan played a key part in this year’s Women’s World Cup qualifying push. Liverpool still plan to be active in the window after three early signings, though losing O’Sullivan and failing to make goalkeeper Jennifer Falk’s loan permanent are setbacks to their summer plans.
