Spain midfielder Gavi says Argentina’s Leandro Paredes should not be banned for his role in the post-World Cup final confrontation.
Argentina’s Paredes, Nahuel Molina and Thiago Almada, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were seen in the on-pitch melee as Spain celebrated a 1-0 victory.
Paredes appeared to put a hand to Spain defender Eric Garcia’s throat, and unused substitute Gavi stepped in to calm things before being forced to the ground by Almada.
Paredes then shoved the Barcelona midfielder to the turf with a hand to his face.
Fifa has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review the incident, and any player or coach involved could face suspension, while the Argentine Football Association may be fined.
Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, external, Gavi said he does not believe Paredes deserves a suspension.
He acknowledged the scenes were a poor example for children, but argued that football also has a tougher, more physical side.
Gavi added that the most reasonable outcome would have been a sending-off during the match and nothing further, saying it is all part of the game.
