Motherwell gained a significant first-leg advantage over HB Tórshavn in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League at Fir Park, marking a successful debut for Alfred Johansson as the team’s manager.

The home side made a strong start, employing a possession-focused strategy that earned admiration last season. Lucas Fadinger was keen to make an impact, creating the first clear chance of the match within five minutes, but he unfortunately sent his shot over the bar from just outside the penalty area.
Motherwell didn’t have to wait long to find the back of the net. New centre-back Martin Moormann made a stunning introduction, scoring with a powerful shot from 25 yards after seizing on a cleared cross from Oscar Priestman in the fifteenth minute. The Austrian’s effort thundered into the top corner, showcasing a level of skill typically associated with seasoned strikers.
The visitors reacted positively to going behind, gradually finding their feet and enjoying more possession as the first half progressed. However, despite their control of the ball, HB Tórshavn struggled to create significant scoring opportunities.
Before halftime, Motherwell nearly extended their lead when Ibrahim Said headed against the crossbar from a close-range chance after meeting a well-placed cross.

Johansson’s team resumed the second half with the same energy, doubling their lead within ten minutes of the restart. Fadinger struck a magnificent shot from the edge of the area, smashing it off the underside of the crossbar and past the goalkeeper, showcasing his scoring prowess.
Jakob Thomsen had a brilliant opportunity to get one back for HB Tórshavn, but his low strike drifted just wide of the target.
Just after the hour mark, Motherwell almost added a third when debutant Willy Vogt broke through, but he was thwarted by a straightforward save from Bjarti Mork.
Both teams made several substitutions in the final 20 minutes, which disrupted the game’s rhythm.

Ultimately, Motherwell achieved a well-deserved victory and will head to the Faroe Islands next week with a two-goal cushion for the second leg.
