Crowds lined the streets of Milan on Tuesday to bid farewell to legendary defender Franco Baresi.
The 66-year-old passed away last week after a period of ill health.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in football history, Baresi captained AC Milan for 15 seasons, making 719 appearances and scoring 33 goals.
With the Rossoneri, he won 18 trophies: six Serie A titles, three Champions Leagues, four Italian Super Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and two Club World Cups.
Capped 81 times by Italy, he was part of the 1982 World Cup-winning squad and captained the team in the 1994 final, where Italy lost to Brazil.
Baresi was named AC Milan’s honorary president in 2020, and the club retired his number six shirt after he ended his playing career.
The funeral took place at the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, with club icons such as Paolo Maldini, Marco van Basten, Clarence Seedorf, Roberto Baggio and Alessandro Costacurta in attendance.
Although the current AC Milan squad is in Australia on a pre-season tour, several first-team players not traveling were present, including U.S. forward Christian Pulisic.
AC Milan will honor their former captain before Wednesday’s friendly against Inter.
