Is There a Divide Between…

In the most recent episode of The Devils’ Advocate podcast on BBC Radio Manchester, the discussion centered around Old Trafford’s exclusion as a host venue for Euro 2028.

Co-host Gaz Drinkwater remarked, “When it’s vibrant, it’s extraordinary. And that includes not just Manchester United matches—think of David Beckham’s iconic free-kick against Greece in 2001; the atmosphere was electric then, and it can be just as energetic for England’s matches.”

“There’s often a divide between many Manchester United supporters and the England national team. Some fans don’t rally behind England due to past hostilities aimed at prominent United players like Wayne Rooney and David Beckham. Likewise, many England fans hold grievances against Manchester United, reflecting the broader animosity some English football fans feel towards the club.”

“If Old Trafford hosted an England match, it could foster reconciliation and bridge those gaps,” he continued. “Though I align more with United, my support for England is equally strong, and I’m eager to see a connection between United and the national team.”

“Culturally, there might be some divisions, but I’m optimistic they can be mended. It’s disappointing that this opportunity won’t materialize.”

We want to know your thoughts! Are you a devoted supporter of the national team, or do you relate to the perceived ‘separation’ Gaz mentioned? And do you think it’s unfortunate that Old Trafford won’t be a venue for Euro 2028, or does it not concern you?
