South African midfielder Jayden Adams has tragically passed away at the age of 25, just weeks after playing a vital role in South Africa’s advancement from the World Cup group stage for the first time.
Adams, a player for Mamelodi Sundowns, started in South Africa’s initial two matches—a 2-0 loss to host Mexico and a 1-1 draw against Czechia. He later contributed from the bench in the 1-0 upset win over South Korea, securing South Africa’s place in the Round of 32.

Adams developed through the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC, becoming the first player from their academy to secure a professional contract. Over his tenure, he made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch before transferring to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, expressed profound sadness over the loss, stating, “Our country mourns the loss of one of its brightest young talents alongside his family, teammates, and the millions of supporters who witnessed his journey from an aspiring academy player to a full-fledged Bafana Bafana international.”
