Josko Gvardiol has highlighted his ability to adapt to the versatile style of Pep Guardiola’s team by excelling in multiple positions, including in attacking roles.

Since joining the club in the summer of 2023, the Croatian defender has made a significant impact, establishing himself as a formidable presence in Manchester City’s defense and consistently delivering outstanding performances week after week.

This was particularly evident when Gvardiol was named the club’s Player of the Season during a challenging campaign for the Blues, as Manchester City concluded the 2024/25 season without securing a major trophy for the first time in nine years.

As the second-most expensive defender in the history of English football, Gvardiol has proven to be worth every penny, showcasing his defensive skills, ball control, and offensive contribution, establishing himself as one of City’s top performers.

At just 23 years old, he doesn’t fit the traditional mold of a centre-back. His development under Pep Guardiola has involved taking on various roles, with most of his first two seasons spent playing as a left-back.

Even when deployed outside his natural position, the former RB Leipzig player has consistently performed at a high level. Gvardiol has excelled in his defensive responsibilities while also contributing in the attacking phase, netting 11 goals and providing numerous assists during his tenure at Manchester City.

Though primarily a centre-back, Gvardiol’s versatility is evident, as demonstrated by his two assists this season—one against Brentford and another against Monaco.

In a recent interview with Manchester City, Gvardiol spoke about his comfort in playing various positions, emphasizing his adaptability on the pitch.

“When I was younger, I played in many positions—right winger, left winger, striker, and in central roles as well,” he shared.

“Since joining Manchester City, my game hasn’t drastically changed. However, I learn something new from our manager every day.”

“He’s one of the best, and I’m grateful to still be part of this team in my third season. I look forward to getting plenty of minutes this season and hopefully winning some trophies.”

Josko Gvardiol is undeniably a generational talent—an excellent defender with skills that go far beyond mere defending. At just 23 years of age and committed to doing whatever it takes for his team to succeed, it’s exciting to imagine how high the Croatian’s potential can soar, especially at the Etihad.
