La Liga President Javier…

Javier Tebas, the president of La Liga, has criticized Paris Saint-Germain in a recent interview with L’Équipe, advocating for a change in the current landscape of French football.

The imbalance of power in Ligue 1 has emerged as a pressing issue once more. Similar to last year, PSG has attempted to postpone matches to bolster their UEFA Champions League campaign. This strategy proved effective when their fixture against FC Nantes was rescheduled, allowing Les Parisiens to advance in the UCL at Chelsea’s expense (8-2).

Now, PSG has made a request to the LFP to postpone their upcoming match against RC Lens. Les Sang et Or are just one point shy of the current European champions in the league standings, although PSG holds a game in hand. The postponement is sought to better prepare for their UCL quarter-final clash with Liverpool.

“The core issue here is fundamentally about the respect owed to the competition,” Lens stated in a press release on Monday. While Lens aims to prevent a postponement, they lack complete authority over the situation. Overall, Tebas perceives Ligue 1 clubs as too compliant with PSG’s wishes.

“In my view, PSG plays a significant role in the media, especially through BeIN Sports. I’ve heard the opinions of some clubs, but PSG’s influence is bolstered by the silence of the others,” he remarked. “PSG wields power because most clubs choose to remain silent; they don’t dare to speak up. This dynamic needs to change in French football. That doesn’t mean PSG won’t remain the top team in France or lose their competitiveness, but such dominance isn’t necessary.”
