Nico Schlotterbeck, the central defender for Borussia Dortmund, is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after players in his position ahead of the summer transfer window in 2026. The German international is reportedly on Barcelona’s radar, along with several other elite clubs.
Although Schlotterbeck’s contract runs until 2027, sources in Germany indicate that he is considering not renewing his contract with Dortmund. If this is the case, it would compel BVB to sell Schlotterbeck next summer to avoid losing him for free, potentially allowing for a budget-friendly acquisition for clubs like Barcelona.

Liverpool Exits the Schlotterbeck Pursuit
A positive development for Barcelona is that Liverpool appears to be withdrawing from the race for Schlotterbeck. According to BILD (via Sport), the Reds had shown interest in acquiring him this January and were also considering a move for Marc Guehi. However, with Dortmund refusing to sell midseason, Liverpool has shifted its focus to other targets.

Furthermore, one of the other clubs interested in Schlotterbeck is considering him as a backup option to Dayot Upamecano. According to CF Bayern Insider, Bayern Munich are prioritizing a contract extension for Upamecano and are optimistic about reaching an agreement. This could lead Real Madrid—who have met with Upamecano’s agent in search of a defender—to intensify their interest in Schlotterbeck if Bayern secures Upamecano’s new deal.
Barcelona’s Centre-Back Priority for 2026
Barcelona’s manager, Hansi Flick, has indicated that acquiring a left-sided central defender is among his main targets for the upcoming summer transfer window. Barcelona has struggled with its centre-back situation this season, with Andreas Christensen failing to convince Flick. Moreover, Ronald Araujo has not met expectations, and while Eric Garcia has shown some promise, he offers a similar style to Pau Cubarsi, who himself has faced challenges, especially when operating on the left side.
