Luton Town striker Elijah Adebayo has been sidelined for the remainder of the season, merely nine days after his long-awaited return to the first team following an extended injury hiatus.
Adebayo spent 11 months recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained during a match against Leeds United.
He made his comeback as a late substitute in the 2-1 victory over Wycombe on March 14 and was brought on in the 75th minute during the subsequent midweek match against Exeter.
However, the 28-year-old suffered a hip injury in the final moments of that game, necessitating surgery on Monday.
“We’re all heartbroken for Eli because we’ve seen how much effort he’s put in, both physically and emotionally, to return to the pitch this season,” said Hatters manager Jack Wilshere.
“Having gone through a similar experience myself, I understand how disappointing it is to face setbacks right after coming back. It’s truly unfortunate that this has occurred.”
Wilshere added, “We’re all here to support him, just as he has consistently supported his teammates, given his significant role in the club’s recent history.”
Adebayo’s latest injury will not only keep him from participating in Luton’s pursuit of a play-off spot in League One but will also prevent him from playing at Wembley in the Vertu Trophy final against Stockport County on April 12.
