David Silva, a legendary figure at Manchester City, has shared insights about a shortcoming in Pep Guardiola’s management style while reminiscing about the interest he received from top Spanish clubs during his tenure in England.
The former Spain international made 436 appearances for Manchester City, netting 77 goals and delivering 141 assists, solidifying his status as one of the premier imports in the history of the English top-flight.

Between 2010 and 2020, the 39-year-old helped secure 288 victories for the eight-time Premier League champions and was among the first players to gain acclaim following Sheikh Mansour’s acquisition of the club in 2008 through the Abu Dhabi United Group.
During his time at Manchester City, Silva clinched four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and three Community Shields, playing under Guardiola in 175 matches, often serving as a central attacking midfielder within his tactical framework.
While his admiration for Guardiola’s expertise reflects just a fraction of its significance to Silva, who now has a statue outside the Etihad Stadium, he acknowledged a notable limitation in the coach’s approach.
“Working with him (Guardiola) was on another level because he anticipated everything the opposition would do,” Silva remarked in a discussion with Mario Suarez on the El Camino de Mario podcast, with translations provided by Sport Witness.

“He (Guardiola) prepared everything meticulously, which made a significant difference in matches. However, the downside is that he can be quite strict, offering limited freedom. Yet, in many other aspects, he is a genius.”
Prior to his £24 million transfer to England from Valencia in La Liga, Silva was among the world’s most coveted midfielders, having demonstrated his talents on the grandest stages early in his career, ultimately accumulating 14 major trophies during an illustrious 10-year period at the Etihad Stadium.
Both Real Madrid and Barcelona expressed interest in Silva before his move to England, with Real Madrid maintaining their interest as he excelled in the Premier League.
As one of City’s all-time greats, Silva confessed he would have loved the opportunity to join Barcelona but expressed gratitude for the “ten spectacular years” he experienced in Manchester.

“I’m not sure if their interest was genuine,” Silva noted. “Barcelona wanted me, but Valencia wasn’t willing to sell at that time. Eventually, due to financial issues, they sold both (David) Villa and me. Would I have liked to play for Barça? Who wouldn’t?”
After a decade of success at City, Silva returned to Spain to join Real Sociedad in 2020, but an ACL injury led to his retirement in 2023. Since then, the former attacking midfielder has started producing his own wine.
