Manchester City Prospect…

A promising young talent emerging from Manchester City has disclosed that he turned down an early opportunity with Liverpool to pursue his development at the Etihad Stadium.

Stephen Mfuni has steadily advanced through Manchester City’s Academy, earning a reputation as a sophisticated left-footed defender and one of the club’s most promising talents.

Joining City’s youth program before hitting his teenage years, he has become a key figure in the Elite Development Squad, garnering recognition for his calmness on the ball and tactical awareness that surpasses his age.

A pivotal moment in his career occurred during the 2023/24 season, when Mfuni played a crucial role in City’s convincing 4–0 victory over Leeds in the FA Youth Cup final, showcasing his defensive reliability and confidence in transitioning to midfield roles.

This impressive performance led to his inclusion in Pep Guardiola’s senior pre-season tour of North America in 2024, along with a spot on The Guardian’s esteemed “Next Generation” list that same year.

Now, in an interview with BBC Three Counties Radio, Mfuni, who is currently thriving on loan at Championship club Watford, reflected on a significant choice he made early in his career regarding Premier League rival Liverpool.

“From under sevens to under nines, I was at both City and Liverpool simultaneously, but I chose City because I felt more at home there,” Mfuni shared.

The defender elaborated on his recent loan to Watford, explaining, “City recalled Max Alleyne, who I talk to often, and he spoke highly of Watford, mentioning the positive environment and staff, which influenced my decision to come here.”

“I aim to gain as much experience as possible so that nothing feels unfamiliar when I return. As a team, we’re focused on promotion; we believe we can achieve it by remaining united and pushing ourselves every day.”

Mfuni added, “People often overlook loans, but I’m here to contribute everything I can to the team and I’m enjoying every match.”

“Before my arrival, I did my homework on what to anticipate, learning the do’s and don’ts, and I’m applying that to my game. I’m committed to improving across all aspects, both my strengths and weaknesses.”

The 2025/26 season has marked Stephen Mfuni’s genuine entry into senior football, following appearances as a substitute in significant Premier League and Champions League matches, including encounters with Napoli and Manchester United.

He made his competitive debut for Manchester City in January 2026, coming on for Nathan Aké at halftime during a 10–1 FA Cup victory over Exeter City, exhibiting the precise distribution and positioning that have led to comparisons with established stars.

His subsequent loan to Watford has already reaped rewards, as he has excelled in both central and left-back roles under manager Ed Still, notably playing a full 90 minutes in a crucial 2–1 away win at Bristol City.
