Kobbie Mainoo is expected to seek a transfer away from Manchester United in the upcoming winter transfer window.

However, Sky Sports News reports that the club will not allow the 20-year-old to leave until Bruno Fernandes recovers from his injury.

Fernandes suffered a hamstring injury during a recent match against Aston Villa. The severity of the injury is currently unclear, but he may be sidelined for approximately a month.

Manager Ruben Amorim sees Mainoo as a direct backup for Fernandes. He missed the game against Villa due to a calf issue and will also not be available for the Boxing Day match against Newcastle United.

However, his injury is considered to be less severe than that of Fernandes.

Mainoo has made a total of 84 senior appearances for United, but his opportunities have been limited since Amorim took charge last year.

The Portuguese manager regards the 20-year-old as a number eight, competing with Fernandes for the same position.

As Fernandes’ natural successor, Mainoo would likely have started against Newcastle on Friday, yet he has yet to begin a Premier League match this season, with all 11 of his appearances in the top flight coming off the bench.
