Marseille Faces ‘Very Bad…

LENS, France — United States winger Timothy Weah exited the pitch due to what seemed to be a thigh injury during Marseille‘s 2-1 defeat to Lens, having provided his first assist for the Ligue 1 club earlier in the match.

Marseille has not yet responded to The Associated Press’ inquiry regarding the specifics of Weah’s injury.

In the 17th minute of the match, Weah assisted Mason Greenwood in scoring the opening goal and was substituted for Leonardo Balerdi in the 52nd minute, having appeared to injure his left thigh.

After the match, Marseille’s coach Roberto De Zerbi indicated through a translator that it could be a minor issue, but added, “it would be very bad news for us if he has sustained a serious injury.”

This summer marked Weah’s return to the French league following an inconsistent two-year period at Juventus.

Tim’s father, former FIFA Player of the Year George Weah, had a brief stint at Marseille 25 years ago towards the end of his career.

Before joining Juventus in 2023, Weah spent four seasons at Lille, where he was part of the team that won the Ligue 1 title in 2021.

In other league news, defending champions PSG seized the top spot in the French league standings, moving a point ahead of Lens, following a 3-0 victory over Brest on Saturday.
