Vitor Matos dismissed speculation regarding a possible play-off bid, even as Swansea City celebrated a decisive victory over Sheffield Wednesday, marking a significant improvement in their recent performance.
Following a resounding 4-0 win on Sunday, Swansea has climbed to 15th in the Championship, their highest ranking in over three months, and they now sit just five points behind the top six.
Matos emphasized that while he sees “a lot of potential” in his squad, their primary goal is to become “the best possible team” for each match. “That’s our focus,” he remarked.
“In this season’s Championship, a win can make you feel close to the play-offs, but a loss can make you anxious about relegation.” He highlighted the importance of maintaining emotional stability and adopting the right mindset.
After a defeat against West Brom on November 29 left them hovering just above the relegation zone by goal difference, Swansea has since claimed 25 points from their last 13 matches, alleviating fears of relegation.
Realistically, a push for the play-offs appears challenging for a Swansea team that has spent much of the 2025-26 season evading relegation threats. However, if Matos’ squad can sustain their form from the past three months, they might still contend for a top-six finish later in the season.
“To achieve that, we need to continue improving; it’s essential we focus on the process rather than the end product,” Matos added. “That’s what has shaped us so far, and it’s crucial for our next match, especially considering our hectic schedule with games every couple of days.”
Having won three of their last four matches, Swansea is set to face ninth-placed Derby County next weekend, with a win potentially drawing them level on points with the Rams. Following that, they will have two consecutive home matches against play-off contenders Bristol City and Preston, before heading to face high-flying Ipswich Town.
