Matos hails brilliant…

Vitor Matos, the new head coach, praised Josh Tymon for his “brilliant” goal as Swansea City celebrated a much-needed 2-0 victory over Oxford United, marking their first success from set pieces this season.

Before facing the U’s, Swansea was the only team in the Championship yet to score from a set-piece in the league.

That changed when Marko Stamenic headed in from Tymon’s free-kick just before halftime, eliminating their unfortunate record. They quickly followed up with a stunning second goal as Eom Jisung’s corner was not fully cleared, allowing Tymon to volley from 20 yards into the top corner.

“It was a brilliant goal—I just hope he can replicate it!” Matos said, smiling. “It was a massive goal, but his overall performance was equally impressive. He defended well, thwarted crosses—a crucial aspect of the Championship. He balanced the team’s dynamics and supported our attacks, finding ways into the final third. Tymo had an excellent game, and I’m really pleased.”

“The goal was fantastic, but it was also the culmination of his performance,” he added.

Swansea managed to maintain their lead in the second half, securing a 2-0 victory that ended their five-match losing streak and provided Matos with his first points in charge during his third game.

Recognizing Swansea’s poor set-piece performance, Matos said, “It’s something we analyzed previously. We knew improvements were needed offensively regarding set-pieces. Scoring one and then another from a second phase was significant.”

With this win, Swansea moved up to 20th place, gaining their first victory in seven league matches, although they remain only three points above the relegation zone as they prepare to face 22nd-placed Portsmouth on Tuesday.

Matos is uncertain about the availability of Josh Key for the upcoming clash after the right-back missed the match against Oxford due to illness.
