Mauricio Pochettino rules…

Mauricio Pochettino has once again downplayed rumors of his potential return to Tottenham Hotspur, while expressing optimism that his former team will avoid relegation despite facing a tough season.

Pochettino, who enjoyed a successful spell as Spurs’ head coach from 2014 to 2019, has frequently been linked with a return to the club. However, his current role as head coach of the US men’s national team has prevented him from taking over this season during Tottenham’s struggles. His US Soccer contract runs until August, meaning he won’t be free for another managerial role until after this summer’s World Cup.

Ahead of the US’s friendly match against Portugal on Tuesday, Pochettino emphasized that his primary focus is on leading the national team into a home World Cup.

“Everyone knows that my commitment is with the national team,” he stated, adding that he has not been approached regarding positions at Tottenham or Real Madrid, where he has also been rumored to be a candidate should they decide to part ways with Álvaro Arbeloa.

Pochettino left the door open for a continued role with the US national team. “Who knows what will happen,” he reflected. “We are open. We don’t have a contract for the future, but if we’re both happy, why not? In football, you can never say never.”

“But right now isn’t the time for those discussions. It’s about focusing on the World Cup, and afterwards, we’ll have time to talk depending on the federation’s vision and our feelings about the future.”

When asked about Tottenham’s recent form, which has left them teetering just above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining, Pochettino expressed his confidence that Spurs will avoid the drop, regardless of who is in charge. The club is reportedly targeting Roberto De Zerbi, reportedly putting together a long-term deal for him to start immediately.

“I’m confident they’ll stay up, with or without a coach,” Pochettino said. “They have incredible players and a fan base that will energize the team to succeed. It will be challenging, of course, because of the current dynamics, but I genuinely believe in this club and trust they will remain in the Premier League.”
