Bayern Munich staged a remarkable comeback from a first-half deficit to dominate RB Leipzig 5-1 in Saturday’s marquee Bundesliga matchup at the Red Bull Arena.
Leipzig had kicked off the new year with a strong performance, winning 2-0 against Freiburg at home on Wednesday, thanks to two unanswered goals in the second half.

Bayern also began positively in 2026, overcoming an early deficit to secure a victory against Cologne away from home, marking their third consecutive league win.
Under the guidance of Vincent Kompany, Leipzig maintained their impressive unbeaten Bundesliga record this season, entering the weekend with no losses (W16, D2).
However, Bayern’s slow start was partly due to Kompany’s decision to bench key players Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich early in the match, allowing Leipzig to seize control.
Christoph Baumgartner and Antonio Nusa squandered two excellent chances to give the home side an early lead just seven minutes in, but Leipzig continued to pressure their more illustrious opponents.

The Brazilian forward made no mistake, scoring his sixth goal of the season with a precise finish that put Leipzig ahead.
Nusa nearly made it 2-0 just four minutes later, but his close-range shot soared inches above the crossbar, leaving Bayern with an unexpected lifeline.
Despite Leipzig’s chances, Bayern struggled to create any clear opportunities in the first half, registering only five shots, two of which were on target.

The second half saw a completely different narrative, with Bayern determined to equalize following Kimmich’s introduction.
It took just five minutes after the break for the reigning champions to level the score.
Dayot Upamecano intercepted a risky pass close to Leipzig’s penalty area, leading to a rebound that Serge Gnabry capitalized on, slotting the ball expertly past Peter Gulaszi.
This goal flipped the momentum in Bayern’s favor, putting Leipzig on the back foot.
Although Harry Kane had been relatively quiet throughout the match, he made a significant impact in the 67th minute.

The former Tottenham Hotspur captain skillfully controlled a cross from Olise and took the time he needed before delivering a stunning strike that beat Gulaszi, bringing his league tally for the season to an impressive 21 goals, placing him at the top of Germany’s scoring charts.
This goal compelled Leipzig to take more risks, and they almost clawed one back through Yan Diomande, but a brilliant save from Manuel Neuer denied the promising winger.
When it comes to capitalizing on missed opportunities, few teams are as lethal as Bayern.
Jonathan Tah, who had scored only once in 14 league appearances before this match, found himself on the scoresheet thanks to Olise’s exquisite corner kick, which allowed him to head home unchallenged and end his goal drought in style.
Little did anyone know that this would kickstart Bayern’s formidable offensive display.
Olise completed a hat-trick of assists in the 85th minute, setting up Aleksandar Pavlovic for an easy tap-in from just a few yards out.
After providing three assists for his teammates, the French winger capped off an incredible performance with a spectacular left-footed goal into the top corner.
