Motherwell has secured the signing of centre-back Jake Girdwood-Reich from MLS team St Louis City on a three-year contract.

The 22-year-old marks Motherwell’s fourth addition of the summer and began his football journey in Sydney, with a brief period at St Johnstone’s academy during his early development.

Girdwood-Reich joined St Louis in 2024, registering 23 senior appearances for the club, although he spent the previous season on loan at Auckland FC in Australia.

“I’m thrilled to be here,” Girdwood-Reich stated in an interview with the club’s media team.

“We’ve been in discussions for a while, and I was eager to finalize everything so I could get to work.

“The manager impressed me with his vision for how he wants the team to play, which is crucial for me. I understand what he expects from me, and I’m aware of what I can expect from him in return.

“I already know a few of the players and have played against others, so I don’t anticipate any issues with settling in. It’s an exciting few weeks ahead, and I’m glad to be part of Motherwell’s journey.”

Head coach Alfred Johansson commented: “Jake possesses a perfect mix of experience and youthful talent.

“At just 22, he’s enthusiastic and full of energy. He still has plenty of room for development, yet he has enough experience to adapt well in this setting. Defensively, he’s a strong and intelligent player whose attributes align with our style of play.”
