José Mourinho has disclosed that he had discussions with Rodri regarding a potential transfer to Real Madrid. He noted that the World Cup winner “harbored doubts” about the move, which raised concerns for Mourinho about securing the midfielder’s signature.
Mourinho was introduced as the new coach of Madrid on Tuesday, posing with president Florentino Pérez after signing a three-year contract. In his first interview since taking the position, he appeared on the late-night Spanish TV show El Chiringuito.
Meanwhile, Barcelona announced the acquisition of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri from Manchester City on the same day, a move that had initially been predicted for Madrid.
“I’ve spoken to [Rodri] several times,” Mourinho revealed. “Real Madrid presented him with a compelling offer. The relationship between Real Madrid and City is quite positive, and the offer was significant. Rodri had his reservations, which in turn made me question the potential signing.”
“He’s an exceptional player, but at a club as prestigious as Real Madrid, we can’t have players who hesitate. That is the principle at play here. He conducted himself well, and I wish him all the best.”
Mourinho, who previously managed the team from 2010 to 2013, returns to Madrid following a two-season period without a major trophy and the dismissal of two coaches, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa, due to internal conflicts.
“I’ve encountered a squad eager to succeed,” Mourinho commented on Tuesday. “It’s an open and sensible dressing room. From day one, I haven’t had to take on a more aggressive leadership style—although I can when needed—thanks to their commendable behavior.”
“Regarding [Kylian] Mbappé, he is absolutely amazing,” Mourinho continued. “His talent is out of this world. Last season was unusual and tough for everyone; both Xabi and Álvaro faced the consequences of that. Winning and losing depend on multiple factors, and I don’t think the blame lies solely with a few individuals—many people underperformed last year.”
Real Madrid has added six new players to their roster this summer: Marc Cucurella, Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espí. Mourinho stated he is content with the squad and does not anticipate further signings before the transfer window closes.
“No,” he affirmed. “While I’m not saying there won’t be more signings—since the market is still open—if you ask me if the squad is finalized, then yes. I’m satisfied with the current roster.”
Real Madrid begins their 2026/27 season away against Espanyol this Saturday, aiming to challenge Barcelona for the title after the Catalans secured back-to-back LaLiga championships.
