Nainggolan on Antwerp’s…

Antwerp is having a dismal season, currently positioned second from the bottom in the Pro League. The likelihood of a managerial shake-up looms large. This turmoil has caught significant media attention, prompting comments from former midfielder Radja Nainggolan. Now 37, Nainggolan is playing for Lokeren after his stint with Antwerp from the summer of 2021 to October 2022, where he made 55 appearances and netted six goals before his contract was terminated due to ongoing controversies.

When asked whether he believes he could contribute to the current squad, Nainggolan delivered a characteristic response. In an interview with HLN, he remarked, ‘I think I could still play for this Antwerp side. Definitely in terms of quality. In the starting lineup? Absolutely. They can run and I’ll distribute the ball.’ While this was likely said with a playful twist, it does highlight the lack of leadership on the field for Antwerp. An experienced midfielder could certainly offer assistance, though many would contend that Nainggolan’s controversial history might not make him the ideal candidate.

Since joining Lokeren in January, he has played a key role in their revival, helping them climb from the bottom of the table to playoff contention, though they ultimately missed promotion. Currently, Lokeren holds the 10th position in the Challenger Pro League, with three wins, two draws, and six defeats from their first 11 matches.
