Netherlands Gakpo Shares…

Forward Cody Gakpo of the Netherlands announced on Saturday that his partner, model Noa van der Bij, suffered the loss of their unborn son during pregnancy.

The couple, who already share one son, was expecting the new baby in October. Gakpo is currently participating in the World Cup, where the Netherlands has advanced to the knockout rounds.

According to the Dutch Football Association (KNVB), he will remain with the team for the tournament.

Van der Bij shared a poignant post on social media featuring a photo of them holding hands over a blanket and a small knitted hat, announcing the passing of their infant.

“Thank you for your love and support. Elijay Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son,” she wrote.

In his own message, Gakpo expressed, “This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”

The KNVB confirmed Gakpo’s decision to stay with the national team, stating, “We stand by Cody and his family during this very sad situation. We are aware of what has transpired and support him in every possible way.”

“Cody has determined, after discussions with his girlfriend, to remain with the group. We respect their privacy and will refrain from making any further statements.”

At 27, Gakpo has already made a significant impact, scoring twice in the Netherlands’ victory over Sweden, leading his team to win their group. The Netherlands will play against 2022 semifinalist Morocco in a round of 32 match on Monday in Mexico.
