Brazil football icon Neymar made an emotional return to the pitch for his national team, as Selecao triumphed over Scotland with a score of 3-0 in their last group match at the 2026 World Cup.
Having last represented Brazil in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023, Neymar’s selection for the tournament came as a bit of a surprise. He had missed the initial two matches due to a calf injury.
Despite the setback, the 34-year-old was fully recovered in time to join the bench for the final game of Group C. He was substituted on for Matheus Cunha in the 76th minute, when Brazil was comfortably ahead.
This match marked Neymar’s 129th appearance for the national squad, and he was visibly moved as he took to the field at Miami Stadium.
Captured wiping away tears, he shared heartfelt embraces with teammates and family at the final whistle. Currently a member of Santos in Brazil, he recently dodged relegation, and while he remains a Brazilian football legend, his role on the team may be limited given the talent available, including stars like Vini Jr., Raphinha, and Matheus Cunha.
Despite his limited minutes on the field against Scotland, Neymar showed flashes of brilliance and will be keen to make a mark as he gains match fitness during the World Cup.
With this victory, Brazil has secured the top spot in Group C and will next face the runner-up from Group F, which includes the Netherlands, Japan, and Sweden. That match is scheduled to be played in Houston on Monday, June 29.
