Former Spurs defender Ramon Vega has expressed concern over the significant disconnect between the fans and players at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, stating that he doubts the club will be able to mend it.

The central defender, who transferred to Tottenham from Cagliari in January 1997, made a total of 81 appearances for the London team throughout his tenure.

On the Sacked In The Morning podcast, Vega commented, “What’s happening at Spurs is the result of years of considerable neglect regarding the footballing aspect of the club.”

“It’s not about the business side or facilities; while they have an impressive stadium, it’s lacking the essential support structures,” he added.

“This neglect has been building up over nearly a decade, and it has finally begun to catch up with them in recent seasons.” Vega noted that despite having some of the world’s best managers, they weren’t able to address these issues. He recalled how Ange Postecoglou, despite achieving success, was subsequently dismissed.

Vega highlighted the presence of top talents like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, lamenting that the club failed to capitalize on their potential. He pointed out that Kane had to go to Bayern Munich before achieving silverware.

He criticized the board and ownership for their mismanagement, noting that the team could be facing relegation as a direct consequence of their decisions. “They could have made key moves in the January transfer window but chose not to,” he pointed out.

“The issues at the club extend far beyond simple management; there’s a complete lack of identity and philosophy,” he lamented, emphasizing the vast gap between fans and players, which he believes may be insurmountable.

Vega concluded that the solution lies in either a change of ownership or a comprehensive overhaul of the board and management. “
