Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi has already made a name for himself as one of the top young centre-backs in global football, and the 19-year-old is continuously rising to the occasion.
With Spain gearing up for their FIFA World Cup opener, Cubarsi shared insights with Mundo Deportivo about handling increased responsibilities at both club and international levels, his admiration for Lionel Messi, and his aspirations to make a significant impact on the grandest stage in football.

Following a remarkable ascent over the last two seasons, Cubarsi is now considered one of Spain’s key defensive players, despite his young age.
While many athletes might feel pressured by such expectations, the Barcelona prodigy seems ready to take them on with confidence.
Taking on More Responsibility for Barcelona and Spain
Discussing his development, Cubarsi emphasized that he does not let his age define his performance on the field.
When reflecting on the leadership skills he’s cultivating, Cubarsi stated,
“At the end of the day, age is just a number. On the pitch, it’s your abilities that matter, not your age.”

“I am actively working on improving my leadership skills, as it keeps me focused and benefits the team through effective communication,” he added.
With many players from Barcelona part of the squad, Cubarsi feels that this familiarity is fostering good chemistry within the national team.
“Yes, there are a lot of us from Spain, and we’re excited to contribute to the national side,”
“It’s unfortunate that some teammates were left out, but those who are here are coming in with great enthusiasm, and we want to perform well for those who couldn’t join us.”
Drawing Comparisons to Puyol and Admiring Messi
One of the adjustments Cubarsi has faced is transitioning between the distinct playing styles of Barcelona and the Spain national team under coach Luis de la Fuente.

On the subject of the tactical differences between the two teams, the young defender acknowledged,
“Yes, they are two very different styles—Barça’s and the national team’s.”
He also looked back on the iconic former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and his memorable World Cup semi-final goal.

When asked if he hopes to create a similar moment for Spain, Cubarsi replied,
“If it can happen, that would be amazing. Because it would mean we’ve made it to the semi-finals, which is fantastic.”
“And if I can contribute to that in a positive way, that would be spectacular.”
One of the most striking parts of the conversation occurred when Cubarsi was questioned about the prospect of playing against Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona academy product confessed that the Argentine superstar remains one of the footballers he looks up to the most.
“Yes, he has been my idol since I was young. I’ve never seen him in person, not even on the pitch.”
“I would have preferred to play alongside him on my team, but if the situation arises where I must face him, I’ll give my all and do my best to defend against him,” he concluded.
