Truro City manager John Askey commended his team’s efforts following their 2-0 defeat against Altrincham.
The Tinners had more opportunities in the first half but failed to capitalize, while the hosts converted their chances effectively.
Truro now finds itself 10 points adrift at the bottom of the National League with only 10 matches remaining, as their aspirations for a second consecutive season in the fifth tier continue to wane.
“You can’t fault the players for their effort; it was definitely there,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall. “We just need to keep pushing forward, regardless of the circumstances. Even if we reach a point where relegation is unavoidable, we must still play with pride.”
“The players need to demonstrate their ability to compete at this level individually, and hopefully, we can gather some points before the season concludes.”
Askey expressed frustration over the missed opportunities, particularly ahead of Declan Howe’s opening goal. On-loan winger Freddie Issaka from Plymouth Argyle struck the post early, with Tyler Harvey also coming close.
“In the first 15 to 20 minutes, we had a handful of chances and hit the post twice. If you don’t convert your chances, it can come back to haunt you, and that’s exactly what happened today,” Askey noted.
“It’s disappointing because our start was excellent, but I did feel a bit exposed when we lost possession. That said, I don’t believe that’s where the goals originated, but it encapsulates this season’s struggles.”
