Official since 1973, the fixture originally paired the Champions League/European Cup winners with the Cup Winners’ Cup holders, a format used until that competition ended in 1999.
From 2000 onward, the Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup) winners became the opponents.
Real Madrid are the most decorated club with six titles, while Liverpool’s four victories are the most by an English side.
Aberdeen remain the only Scottish team to have lifted the trophy.
