Former England footballer Raheem Sterling has been detained on suspicion of drug driving following a crash involving his Lamborghini, according to reports from The Independent.

The 31-year-old, who previously played for Manchester City, reportedly crashed into the barriers on the M3 southbound near the Minley Interchange shortly before 9 am on Thursday, May 28.

Hampshire Police reported that a 31-year-old man from Berkshire was arrested on charges of driving while impaired due to drugs, dangerous driving, possession of Class C drugs, and failure to provide a breath sample.

No injuries occurred, and there were no other vehicles involved in the incident, according to the police.

A source close to Sterling informed The Independent that he has faced an “extremely difficult couple of years,” and this incident reflects that struggle. The source noted that the situation highlights the challenges faced by athletes who may no longer be deemed “fit for purpose,” expressing concerns about the tremendous psychological burden placed on them.

Having played for clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal, Sterling is currently with Eredivisie club Feyenoord in the Netherlands, where he signed in February and will remain until the end of the season.

Throughout his England career from 2012 to 2022, Sterling was recognized for his talent, receiving accolades such as the FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year during his time at Manchester City.
