Rangers Encounter Rival…

If a report by journalist Pete O’Rourke is accurate, Rangers are eager to sign Cameron Ashia on a Bosman transfer during the summer window. They are prepared to present him with a pre-contract offer, but the competition will be fierce, as their Old Firm rivals Celtic and several clubs from the English Championship are closely monitoring the Huddersfield Town midfield talent.

The 20-year-old midfielder began his career at the Fox Soccer Academy before being signed by Derby County for their reserve team in July 2022. Following the end of his scholarship the next year, he left Derby and joined Huddersfield Town in April 2024.

Emerging in League One

Although Ashia made his senior debut in an EFL Trophy match four months later, he went on loan to Torquay United in March 2025 to gain regular first-team experience. However, he returned to Huddersfield last summer without making an appearance for the Gulls.

Currently, Ashia is having a breakthrough season in League One, with three goals and three assists in 18 appearances. His creativity and flair as a playmaker have significantly contributed to Huddersfield’s fight for a playoff position this season, attracting interest from numerous Championship clubs.

In addition to the EFL Trophy and EFL Cup matches, Ashia has primarily participated as a substitute under coaches Lee Grant and Liam Manning. Nonetheless, he has demonstrated sufficient potential to warrant a significant career move. Rangers, revitalized under Danny Rohl, are keen to bring him to Scotland, and his versatility across various midfield roles would enhance Rohl’s adaptable tactical approach.

Potential Fit in Rohl’s Rangers Strategy

Last summer, Rangers signed Thelo Aasgaard from Luton Town, a high-profile addition, but inconsistent performances have limited his starting opportunities recently. Mohamed Diomande has occasionally played as a ‘number 10’ in Rohl’s 4-2-3-1 setup; however, he is better suited as a ‘number 6’ or deep-lying playmaker.

Mikey Moore, typically a wide forward, has shown effectiveness centrally, but keeping him may prove challenging, as he is on a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur. The opportunity to join Ibrox should excite Ashia, as it would allow him to showcase his skills as a ‘number 6’ while also providing the flexibility to operate on the left, enabling Rohl to adopt a more aggressive 4-2-2-2 formation. It remains uncertain whether Ashia will run down his contract or agree to a new deal to continue his development at Kirklees.
